Guy walks into a bar

Motherless Brooklyn

Guy walks into a bar is a joke-opening formula that Lionel Essrog uses while Frank Minna is being treated after an emergency. The setup leads into an octopus joke, then returns in Minna’s own variation, making the phrase a small recurring structure for the conversation as the men wait.

The Familiar Setup

Lionel Essrog begins with the familiar opening while watching over the situation and trying to keep Minna from noticing his attention. He follows it with a story about a man who brings an octopus into a bar and wagers that it can play any instrument there. Rather than presenting the opening as a punchline in itself, the joke depends on the audience recognizing the conventional setup and waiting for its turn.

Minna welcomes the form, observing that jokes begin with the man and the bar, and treats the attempt as already entertaining. The exchange gives the phrase a practical role: it establishes a shared rhythm between the three men during an unsettled wait, without resolving the urgent question of what happened.

Minna’s Variation

Later, after Lionel has asked who was responsible, Minna offers a joke of his own instead of answering directly. His version reworks the octopus into a wordplay question about Octopus and Reactopus sitting on a bench or fence: when Octopus falls off, who remains? Lionel supplies the answer, Reactopus, before asking Minna again who did this.

The return is more than a repetition of the first gag. Lionel’s joke supplies the recognizable barroom frame; Minna’s changes the octopus into a verbal puzzle, carrying the earlier material forward in a new form. Their exchange makes the opening formula a point of connection between teller and listener, even as the question Lionel wants answered remains open.

Narrative Function

The phrase organizes a brief sequence of jokes around a familiar beginning, an octopus, and repeated attempts to keep the conversation going. Minna’s approval of the opening and his later contribution make the humor shared rather than confined to Lionel’s telling. At the same time, the jokes occur alongside Lionel’s effort to learn who harmed Minna, so their light form sits against the seriousness of the scene without displacing it.
